Brian studied social sciences at the Polytechnic of Central London (now the University of Westminster) followed by social anthropology at the University of Cambridge. He has worked as an independent researcher and trainer in the field of children’s rights for over 20 years and currently teaches in the University of Swansea.  

Over the last 14 years Brian has been particularly interested in children’s participation and citizenship, focusing first on European experiences and more recently in the Middle East, Central and Southeast Asia. 

Among his publications are The next generation: Lives of Third World children, Zed Books, 1989, in collaboration with Judith Ennew. Also in collaboration with Judith Ennew, Henk van Beers and others is a more recent research evaluation on children’s participation. Creating an enabling environment: Capacity building in children’s participation, Save the Children Sweden, 2006. With Henk Van Beers and Antonella Invernizzi, Brian edited Beyond Article 12: Essential Readings in children’s participation published by Black on White Publications in 2007 and now being reprinted.
